Crepey skin on the upper arm of a woman in her fifties

Most women's arms look ten years older than their face

Not because they age faster. Because they are the only skin that has never been treated. Collagen X is a body serum for skin that has thinned and lost its texture, and it absorbs in under a minute, straight onto damp skin.

Hair and makeup hide a lot. Sleeves are the only thing that hides an arm.

You can do a great deal with a face. Good skincare, the right foundation, a decent cut and colour. Twenty years of practice and a face gives away far less than people assume.

An arm gives away everything, immediately, and there is nothing to be done about it in the moment except cover it.

I hate my arms! Flabby crepey and old!

I look at my arm in the morning at a certain light and I go, ah, are you kidding me? Whose arm is this?
Glenn Close

It is usually the arms first. Then the chest in a V-neck. The backs of the hands, which are visible constantly and treated almost never. Above the knees.

And the thing almost every woman says about it is that it seemed to happen quickly.

I'm 68 and my arms seem to have gone crepey overnight.

My chest is like crepe paper too! What the hell!!!!

It is never the mirror you were expecting

The angle in a changing room mirror that you did not choose.

Your own hands on the steering wheel.

A photograph somebody took from above.

Bent over the basin washing your hair, catching sight of your forearm from a side you never normally see, and thinking it looks like it belongs to somebody else.

My grandson, age 4, says the skin on my arms and hands is too big for me.

And then the covering up starts, which is its own quiet cost.

I am conscious of them when I wear sleeveless tops, but can't bring myself to cover up in hot weather.

I only display mine on the beach.

I have not worn anything sleeveless in three years.

A cardigan in July is not a fashion choice. It is a decision made in front of a mirror, quickly, without saying anything about it to anyone.

So why does your face get everything and your body gets nothing?

Put a well cared-for face next to an untreated arm and the arm can easily look a decade older. That is not a trick of the light and it is not unlucky genetics. It is twenty years of one getting everything and the other getting nothing.

Count what is on the shelf. Cleanser, serum, retinol perhaps, vitamin C, eye cream, SPF, something for the neck. Hundreds of pounds a year, applied twice a day, without fail, for two decades.

Now count what your arms have had. A bottle of body lotion, used occasionally, chosen on smell.

This is not neglect and it is not vanity misdirected. It is that no body product has ever been designed to fit a real morning.

Nobody thinks of the skin beneath their neck. They're so obsessed with getting rid of a wrinkle or a line on their face that they forget the dead giveaway to age is basically your neck, your décolletage, your arms, the dry skin on your shins.
Jane Seymour

She is right, and the reason is entirely practical.

You did not give up because it did not work. You gave up because it did not fit.

Think about what a body cream actually asks of you.

Dry off completely first.

Cream will not spread on damp skin. It goes streaky and white and pushes around instead of absorbing.

Then rub it in properly.

Arms, chest, hands, legs. That is not thirty seconds, it is several minutes, twice a day.

Then wait.

Because if you dress now it is on your shirt. If you get into bed now it is on the sheets.

And it runs out constantly.

A face is a few square inches. A body is not.

The body cream sits on your skin so it's hard to get dressed after use. Not my lifestyle to put on cream and then just lounge around till it soaks in.

So the bottle gets used four times, moves to the back of the cupboard, and the conclusion becomes nothing works.

Been using it for quite a while, absolutely no difference in my skin whatsoever.

Considering the cost, it is disappointing. It is a mediocre moisturizer. I have used almost all the tube and there is no firming and no change in crepey skin.

Both of those women are right about the products they bought. Neither of them used it long enough for anything structural to happen, and neither of them could have, because the routine was unsustainable from the first week.

The truthful conclusion is not that nothing works. It is that nobody would keep that up twice a day. It has nothing to do with willpower.

The three-minute window

Dermatologists recommend applying to damp skin within three minutes of a shower or bath, while the outer layer is still soft and hydrated. More is absorbed, and the water already in the skin is held rather than lost.

Almost nobody manages it, because almost no body product can be used that way.

A serum can. Thin enough to spread across damp skin. Absorbed in under a minute. Nothing left on the surface to transfer to a shirt or a duvet.

Three steps: towelling off, two pumps of serum in the palm, then getting dressed
Towel off Leave skin slightly damp Two pumps Arms, chest, backs of hands Get dressed No waiting, nothing on your clothes

Morning

Out of the shower, towel off lightly, two pumps, dressed. Twenty seconds, inside a routine you already have.

Evening

Out of the bath, apply while skin is still warm. Carry on with your teeth and your face while it absorbs. Straight into bed, nothing on the sheets.

That is the whole thing. It attaches to something you already do every single day without thinking, which is the only reason any routine survives past the second week.

You are active, you eat well, and it has made no difference to this

I use Boots No.7 body serum on legs and arms, but doubt if the wrinkles can be reversed.
UK women's forum user

That is where most women land, and it is a reasonable place to land given what is on the shelves.

Most reach it having already tried the obvious. More weight training for the arms. Losing a few pounds. Eating better. And the skin looks exactly the same, which is confusing until you know what is actually changing.

It's definitely an age thing. I am very slim with not a lot of flesh on my arms, and they have become wrinkly too.

This is not a fat problem or a muscle problem. It is a structural one, and it is happening below anything exercise can reach.

Skin is not one surface. The part you can see is a fraction of a millimetre thick. Beneath it, roughly one to four millimetres down, sits the dermis, and that is where skin gets its thickness, its firmness and its ability to bounce back.

Two fibres do that job. Collagen is the scaffolding, around eighty per cent of the skin's structure. Elastin is the recoil.

From the mid-twenties, collagen production falls by roughly 1 to 1.5% a year, every year. By your late forties that is two decades of compounding loss. The dermis is measurably thinner than it was, the collagen inside it is sparser and less organised, and the surface above it has less to sit on. That is what crepey skin is: the same amount of skin over a thinner, weaker foundation.

And for many women there is a second, steeper decline on top of it.

Oestrogen is one of the signals that tells the dermis to keep producing collagen. As it falls through perimenopause and menopause, that instruction weakens, and the rate of loss increases sharply. Published research puts it at around 30% of skin collagen in the first five years after menopause, then roughly 2% a year after that.

Brincat et al., British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Confirmed by Affinito 1999 and Hall and Phillips 2005. Cited by the British Menopause Society.

Which is why two women of the same age can have completely different skin. It is not just how old you are, it is how much collagen you have lost and how quickly.

No amount of gym work or creams will reverse the loose surface skin and lack of collagen which causes this.
UK women's forum user

She is half right, and the half she has wrong is the important one.

Gym work will not touch it. She is correct about that, and about ordinary creams too.

But the cells that produce collagen keep working for life. They are called fibroblasts, they are still there in your dermis right now, and they respond to being signalled. Production slows with age. It does not stop, and it can be prompted.

That is the entire difference between a moisturiser and a treatment. One sits on top of the problem. The other has to reach the layer where the problem actually is.

Your skin changes. Your body care should too.

As collagen, hydration and elasticity decline with age, our formula combines high-performance actives that work across the key pathways responsible for keeping skin strong, supple and resilient.

0.5% TECA, supports your skin's own collagen

This is where it gets interesting.

TECA is a highly purified extract of Centella asiatica. Research on human skin fibroblasts, the cells responsible for making collagen, has shown that TECA can significantly increase collagen synthesis.

So while Collagen X contains hydrolysed collagen, we do not rely on simply putting collagen onto your skin. We have formulated with ingredients that help support the biological processes involved in maintaining its structure.

3% Triple Hyaluronic Acid, serious hydration

Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in our skin, where it plays an important role in keeping it hydrated and plump. But like collagen, our skin's ability to hold onto moisture changes with age.

Research into topical multi-weight hyaluronic acid has shown up to a 134% immediate increase in skin hydration, with improvements in hydration, plumping and smoothness continuing with regular use.

We use 3% Triple Hyaluronic Acid, combining three molecular weights for multi-level hydration.

5% Pro-Vitamin B5, because your skin barrier matters too

Collagen gets a lot of attention, but it is only part of the story.

As skin changes with age, it can become noticeably drier. Pro-vitamin B5 has been clinically studied for its ability to increase hydration and support skin-barrier repair.

We use it at a generous 5% concentration to help keep skin soft, comfortable and resilient.

2% Vitamin C, a building block for collagen

Vitamin C is not just there for glow.

It is an essential cofactor in normal collagen formation, with research demonstrating its role in supporting collagen synthesis and stabilising collagen fibres, while providing antioxidant protection.

Paired with TECA and Centella asiatica, it gives us another way to support the skin's collagen network.

3% Squalane, locks the good stuff in

Squalane helps replenish the lipids that keep the skin barrier functioning properly, reducing moisture loss and helping increasingly dry skin feel softer, smoother and more supple.

And yes, there is collagen too

3% hydrolysed collagen helps condition the skin and form a moisture-retaining film, for skin that feels smoother, softer and more supple.

Twelve weeks, or your money back

Collagen remodelling takes time, because it is limited by how quickly the cells in your dermis can build new fibres. Not a fortnight.

So use it properly for twelve weeks. If you do not see a visible improvement, contact us and you will get your money back.

The condition is stated plainly rather than buried: it applies after the full twelve weeks, used as directed. Refunding at week three would be refunding a course that had not happened yet.

Questions

Will this work on skin that has been like this for years?

Newer change responds more quickly. Longer standing change takes longer, and it does still respond, because the cells that produce collagen keep working throughout life. What changes is the timeline, not whether it is possible. Individual results vary.

Is this the same as a body lotion?

No. A body lotion hydrates the outer layer of skin. This is a serum built around a standardised active that acts on the collagen-producing cells in the dermis, one to four millimetres beneath the surface.

Will more exercise not fix it?

Not this. Muscle sits beneath skin and does not change its structure. Plenty of very fit women in their fifties have exactly the same crepiness on their upper arms, which is usually the point at which it becomes clear that it is not a fitness problem.

Do I need to be through menopause for this to be relevant?

No. Collagen decline begins in the mid-twenties and continues at roughly 1 to 1.5% a year regardless. Menopause accelerates it, so the change is often sharpest around then, but the underlying loss has been happening for a long time before that.

How do I use Collagen X?

After showering, towel off lightly and smooth two pumps over slightly damp skin on the areas you want to treat. It absorbs in under a minute, so you can get dressed without waiting.

What if it does not work for me?

Complete the full twelve weeks as directed, and if you do not see a visible improvement, contact us for a full refund.

Your face has had twenty years of attention. Give your arms twenty seconds a day.

I'm 70. I have tried a lot of brands. I wish I had started when I was younger with the first signs.

Collagen loss compounds. Which is an uncomfortable fact and also a useful one, because the point at which support does the most work is always now rather than later.

Two pumps, out of the shower, before you get dressed. That is the whole commitment, and it is the only kind that ever survives.
